Once the third largest city in Roman Britain, St Albans took its name from the Abbey built to commemorate the Roman soldier executed for sheltering a Christian priest. The Verulamium Museum displays objects from the Roman city and just a short walk away is the Roman Theatre, the only visible example of its kind in Britain. St Albans is well known for its Roman remains, but it doesn’t stop there. You can visit the oldest working medieval clock in the country, and the UK’s oldest pub. The city’s Abbey Gateway is also home to Europe’s oldest public school, where Professor Stephen Hawking studied. The city now boasts the St Albans Museum and Gallery, a newly created state-of-the-art gallery set to become a world-class centre for arts and culture. The city centre is jam-packed with Tudor houses as well as exquisite Georgian architecture. Even the Charter Market is historic, being the oldest market still regularly held in the same location in an English city. Today speciality boutiques and independent retailers rub shoulders with major stores and international names, making the city a unique shopping destination. With the twice weekly market, great range of places to eat and appealing visitor attractions, St Albans is a great place for a day out.
