Melton Mowbray is a quintessential English market town and is a popular place to visit on market day. Held every Tuesday and Saturday the market is one of the country’s oldest and finest. One of the town’s greatest claims to fame is the pork pie. Learn the fascinating history of why Melton Mowbray became the original home of the pork pie at Ye Olde Pork Pie Shoppe where Dickinson & Morris have been baking pork pies since 1851. They are now the oldest remaining bakery producing authentic Melton Mowbray Pork Pies in the town centre. As well as pies, Melton Mowbray also has a traditional association with cheese. The town is home to several producers of the King of English Cheeses’, Stilton, and the traditional Red Leicester. Both can be found at the Melton Cheeseboard shop which has the widest range of cheeses in the county with over 150 different varieties. Melton Mowbray also has a rich and varied heritage, and its history is still evident today if you look above the modern shop frontages and at buildings such as Anne of Cleeve’s House, a gift from Henry VIII to his divorced wife. The cathedral sized St Mary’s Church dates from 1170, known as the stateliest and most impressive of all Leicestershire churches, its 100-foot-high tower dominates the town.
