Includes return travel by luxury coach, entrance to Raf Biggin Hill Museum & Chapel with morning refreshments, volunteer led tour of the Museum & Chapel and buffet lunch, and a visit to Polhill Garden Centre (time permitting).
RAF Biggin Hill Museum & Chapel tells the story of RAF Biggin Hill through the personal experiences of those who served there, and the community who supported them. The museum journey begins over 100 years ago when RAF Biggin Hill was just farmland. Its high altitude and strategically important location between London and continental Europe, destined it to become the most important airfield of the Battle of Britain. One of Britain’s oldest aerodromes, RAF Biggin Hill is still internationally recognised as Sir Winston Churchill’s ‘strongest link’. St George’s RAF Chapel of Remembrance was built as a memorial to the aircrew who lost their lives flying from Biggin Hill Sector during the Second World War. It was built in 1951 after a fundraising campaign led by Sir Winston Churchill. The Chapel features a reredos and Book of Remembrance and 12 stained glass windows designed by Sir Hugh Easton. On arriving at the Museum, we enjoy morning refreshments (tea/filter coffee only and cake) included in the price before being taken on a volunteer led tour of the Museum and Chapel. Afterwards we are treated to an included buffet lunch in the Nightingale Café. Time permitting on our way home we call in at the Polhill Garden Centre. Originally a nursery for chrysanthemums and bedding plants this garden centre has developed into one of the largest in this part of the country. Amongst the normal products you expect to find such as plants, garden furniture and implements, there is also bedroom furniture, clothing, a fantastic fruit and savoury pie shop, butchers, grocery shop and the restaurant, which serves a wide range of meals and snacks.
LUNCH MENU: Choose between Deli style sandwiches – The Farmer (cheddar cheese, shredded gammon, sweet pickle & coleslaw) / The Land Girl (cheddar cheese and sweet pickle) / The Angler (tuna mayonnaise) OR jacket potatoes – freshly baked served with butter, salad & toppings (grated cheddar/baked beans/coleslaw/tuna mayonnaise/mixed bean chilli) OR soup of the day served with crusty bread. Please state your choice of menu at time of booking.
Please note: Due to the size of the Museum, Chapel and café, groups will be asked to split into 2 or 3 smaller groups of no more than 15. Time in the café may also be restricted.
