Includes return travel by luxury coach, free time in Market harborough and a visit to Foxton Locks.
Voted one of the best places to live in the country according to The Sunday Times 2023, Market Harborough is a charming market town full of history, culture and independent retailers. Be sure to visit the iconic stilted Old Grammar School in the town centre, enjoy lunch in one of the delicious eateries or grab some food to go and sit in the tranquil memorial gardens just off the town square. The Harborough Museum displays the famous Hallaton Treasure. In 2000 metal detectorists discovered one of the most important Iron Age discoveries in Britain when they unearthed Iron Age coins, mysterious offerings and a unique 1st century Roman cavalry helmet. Harborough Indoor Market continues an 800-year-old tradition of market trading in the heart of the town. With over 60 independent stalls selling everything from the latest fashion, gifts, jewellery, furniture and pet supplies in the General Hall to a specialist butcher, cheesemonger, and cake stall in the Food Hall. This afternoon we drive the short distance through the unspoilt Leicester countryside to Foxton Locks, home to two amazing feats of engineering. The first is the Grade II listed locks on the Leicester Line of the Grand Union Canal. This impressive flight of ten locks is over 200 years old and are the longest and steepest staircase locks in Britain. It takes an average of 45 minutes for boats to travel the entire flight and on a busy day as many as 40 boats make the trip. Alongside the locks you can see the side ponds which provide water for the locks. These ponds are a haven for local wildlife, including ducks, heron and water vole. The second feat of engineering is the inclined plane boat lift. Designed at a time when the canals were the mass transport system for England it was to help improve the capacity of the canal network. To find out how the locks and inclined plane worked visit the Canal Museum. Enjoy a leisurely walk around the canal, browse the second hand bookshop, have a drink at Bridge 61 Pub and grab a cheeky ice cream from the Top Lock Cottage Café.
