Bury St. Edmunds is a picturesque, thriving market town that is rich in history, giving visitors lots to discover. Find out about Bury St. Edmund’s role in the Magna Carter and the story of St. Edmund. Visit the Abbey ruins, the site of one of the most important medieval monasteries in Europe. Enjoy the tranquillity and beauty of the award-winning Abbey Gardens and wonder at Suffolk’s only cathedral. Explore medieval streets and architecture, Georgian squares and Britain’s last remaining Regency theatre. Shop ‘til you drop at independent boutiques and leading high street stores and on Wednesday’s visit the vibrant and bustling market. For refreshments, Bury St. Edmunds has a real café culture with an excellent selection of cafes, tearooms, restaurants, and pubs. This afternoon we make our way to Lavenham, considered by many to be Britain’s best-preserved medieval village and one of Suffolk’s most important wool towns. Medieval charm can be found at every turn, with timberframed buildings lining the narrow streets and lanes leading up to the impressive marketplace. Over 300 buildings are listed as being of architectural and historic interest, including The Guildhall, Little Hall, and De Vere House to name but a few. Take a walk to the stately church of St. Peter and St. Paul, built by donations from rich wool traders from the area.
