Monday: Marking our way north, with suitable stops we aim to be at our hotel in plenty of time to settle in before dinner.
Tuesday: Our first visit today is to the Lakes Distillery, where a tour and tasting of their own whiskey, gin or vodka awaits. Leaving the distillery we enjoy a scenic drive passing Bassenthwaite Lake and Thirlmere as we make our way to Grasmere, probably Cumbria’s most popular village, thanks to William Wordsworth. Visit Wordsworth’s grave in the churchyard, take a walk to Dove Cottage (entrance not included) and perhaps buy some legendary Grasmere Gingerbread. Continuing our scenic drive we pass Ambleside and the northern shores of Windermere as we make our way back to our hotel.
Wednesday: After breakfast we make our way to Haverthwaite Station and enjoy a nostalgic steam train journey on the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway to Lakeside Pier. No visit to the Lake District would be complete without a cruise, and it is from Lakeside Pier that
we sail across Windermere to Bowness. After disembarking there will some time to explore this popular holiday village and have some lunch before we rejoin our coach and head for Hayes Garden World. This award winning garden centre is one of the largest in North West England, with indoor shopping malls packed with fashion, home décor and gifts and a café renowned for its home-cooked food.
Thursday: This morning we head north via the narrow but beautiful Kirkstone Pass, to England’s most beautiful lake, Ullswater. Here we enjoy another relaxing cruise, from Glenridding to Pooley Bridge. Rejoining our coach we head for Keswick. This pretty market town offers a wide range of attractions, from shops and restaurants to museums with a difference and market day is Thursday. We return to our hotel by way of the A6 and Shap.
Friday: We must leave the stunning Lake District and head for home. With suitable stops along the way we hope to be back in Essex late afternoon.
