Our day begins at Heaven Farm, near Uckfield for morning refreshments. Set in 100 acres, Heaven Farm is steeped in 600 years of farming history and the well-preserved farm buildings of the old farmyard give a picture of Victorian life. After a sociable morning coffee and biscuits together, we take a tour of the Ashdown Forest. Originally a deer hunting forest in Norman times, much of the forest was felled for the iron industry leaving the wild heath and moors that we see today. It’s an absolute haven for wildlife and it is of course the home of Winnie the Pooh. Being right at the top of the High Weald there are spectacular views over the Sussex countryside. We return to Heaven Farm for our included ploughman’s lunch. Desserts and hot drinks are available to purchase on the day. This afternoon we visit the ancient market town of East Grinstead. In this handsome market town, we see the longest row of medieval houses in the country and discover its fascinating history and the people who shaped it, including pioneering plastic surgeon Archie McIndoe and his Guinea Pig Club. We’ll visit the interesting old church dedicated to St Swithin where there are a number of curious features including rare old iron grave slabs. There will be time to pop into an antique shop or two and buy tea before heading home.
Price: £52.00 includes return travel by luxury coach, morning refreshments, a guided scenic coach tour of Ashdown Forest, ploughman’s lunch and visit to East Grinstead with a gentle guided stroll through the town.
