Bury St Edmunds is celebrating 1,000 years of history marking the founding of the Abbey of St Edmund by King Canute in 1020. More than a million visitors come to Bury St Edmunds every year, drawn by the presence of a cathedral that once rivalled Canterbury in power and size, and was dedicated to a royal martyr who became the first patron saint of England. As part of the celebrations, there is a new heritage trail through the town and four new guided tours of the abbey. These tours will explore the lives of the abbots, the legend of St Edmund, the abbey itself and life during monastic times. Our visit today to this picturesque, thriving market town will give you the opportunity to perhaps join one of these tours (cost £7, tickets available from the Cathedral Visitor Information Point), as well as enjoying the tranquillity and beauty of the award winning Abbey Gardens, explore medieval streets and architecture, do some shopping and visit the vibrant and bustling market. For refreshments, Bury St Edmunds has a real café culture with an excellent selection of cafes, tearooms, restaurants and pubs.
